Hourly Wage Calculator

How much is an hourly wage over a month and a year?

What is your hourly rate really worth per year? Enter your rate, your hours, and any overtime to see annual, monthly, biweekly, weekly, and daily pay, all in gross figures before taxes. The core formula is simple: annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year. For a standard full time schedule that is rate x 40 x 52, and 40 x 52 is 2,080 hours, so the shortcut is to multiply any hourly rate by 2,080.

How hourly pay converts to a salary

The core formula is simple: annual pay = hourly rate x hours per week x weeks per year. For a standard full time schedule that is rate x 40 x 52, and 40 x 52 is 2,080 hours, so the shortcut is to multiply any hourly rate by 2,080. At $20 an hour that gives $20 x 2,080 = $41,600 a year.

Annual = rate x hours/week x weeks/year
Monthly = annual / 12   Biweekly = rate x hours/week x 2   Weekly = rate x hours/week   Daily (8h) = rate x 8

From the annual figure everything else follows. Monthly pay is annual divided by 12 ($41,600 / 12 = $3,466.67 at $20 an hour). Biweekly pay is two weeks of pay, 80 hours at full time ($1,600.00 at $20 an hour), and there are 26 biweekly paychecks in a year. Weekly pay is one week of hours ($800.00 at $20 an hour), and daily pay on this page is an 8 hour day ($160.00 at $20 an hour).

How overtime works

Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate, often called time and a half. At $20 an hour, each overtime hour pays $30.00. The calculator treats overtime hours as extra hours on top of your regular hours: the overtime inclusive annual total is the regular annual pay plus rate x 1.5 x overtime hours per week x weeks per year. Five overtime hours a week at $20 an hour adds $7,800 a year, for a total of $49,400. Regular weekly overtime is one of the biggest gaps between two jobs that quote the same hourly rate, so it is worth doing this math before comparing an hourly offer to a salary.

Weeks per year and unpaid time off

The standard conversion assumes 52 paid weeks. If you take two unpaid weeks off, use 50 weeks instead: at $20 an hour and 40 hours a week that is $40,000 instead of $41,600. Salaried workers usually keep being paid during time off, while hourly workers often are not, which is why the honest comparison between an hourly job and a salaried job has to count paid time off as well as the headline rate. For a general salary to hourly comparison in the other direction, see our salary calculator, which is the related tool for converting a yearly salary back into an hourly rate.

Gross pay, not take-home pay

Every figure here is gross pay, before taxes and deductions. For an estimate of what actually lands in your account after taxes, see our take-home pay pages and the paycheck calculator.

How these figures are calculated: annual pay is the hourly rate multiplied by hours per week multiplied by weeks per year. A full time year is 40 hours per week times 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours, so annual pay is the hourly rate times 2,080. Monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12, biweekly pay is two weeks of pay (80 hours at full time), weekly pay is 40 hours, and daily pay is 8 hours. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. All figures on this page are gross pay before taxes and deductions.

Hourly wage FAQs

How do you convert hourly pay to annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week by weeks per year. At $20 an hour, 40 hours a week, for 52 weeks, that is $20 x 40 x 52 = $41,600 a year. The shortcut for full time work is rate times 2,080 hours.

How much is $20 an hour a year?

$20 an hour is $41,600 a year working full time (40 hours a week, 52 weeks). That is $3,466.67 a month, $1,600.00 every two weeks, $800.00 a week, and $160.00 for an 8 hour day, before taxes.

How does overtime change the annual total?

Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Five overtime hours a week at $20 an hour adds 5 x $30.00 x 52 = $7,800 a year, lifting the total from $41,600 to $49,400. Ten overtime hours a week lifts it to $57,200.

What is the difference between biweekly and monthly pay?

Biweekly pay is every two weeks, so there are 26 paychecks a year and each one is two weeks of pay. Monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12, so a monthly figure is slightly larger than a biweekly figure for the same job.

How many hours are in a full time work year?

2,080 hours: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. That is the standard factor for converting between hourly and annual pay. Part time at 30 hours a week is 1,560 hours a year.
